Educate

Educating ourselves about the challenges that face both Dominicans and Haitian refugees becomes a real learning experience.

Each afternoon we will visit one of partnership ministries that include New Horizon School, Transformation Ministry DR – a Pregnancy Centre, Iglesia Una Luz en el Camino – an inner-city church ministry in Puerto Plata and Crossover CUPS Mission feeding Haitian refugees.

Each of our partners will provide you with an insight rarely seen by tourists. You will have a better understanding of the social and economic challenges that face these organizations daily. You will have contact with residents and experience what positive changes are being made when individuals reach out to help others.

Some of our volunteers have chosen to use their own gifts and talents with our partners. For example, The Samaritan Foundation operates Vocational Schools that teach sewing, hair dressing and pedicure/manicure nail care. In the past, we had a volunteer teach women how to sew and make handbags that may be sold in local markets.

Another volunteer spent time with Pastor Sandra Pena and her church ministry in Puerto Plata which includes a church, school, medical and pregnancy centre. Our volunteer was able to share her knowledge and experience in areas of self-esteem with young women who participate in life learning skill courses.

We are pleased to offer these educational opportunities where both we and our partners benefit.
